Is our Victorian educational system still fit for purpose in 2025? Should we stop the adult-led teaching of comparison and grades and start meeting the children's needs? We might get better outcomes.
Losing children in the education system
I cried day after day in my primary school playground. I tried hard to understand but was behind in reading and maths. The teachers considered me a 'low achiever' but believed I could do more. I moved to another school when I was nine and had much to catch up on. I learned to read in the next two years, loved learning, and passed my 11+.
A similar thing happened to my son 30 years later. I knew he was more capable than the teachers said he could be, but he needed support. No one believed me. Now at home with Autistic Burnout
See the education system from the child's perspective.
I want to highlight all those who are not able to get a statement and those who are just on the edge of being diagnosed with autism, ADHD, Dyslexia or any other specific learning difficulty who are just managing in mainstream school. Some children struggle to process the information given in class and are not quick enough, and that's not due to a lack of intelligence. There are many more children than teachers realise that are neurodiverse - 1 in 5 children are neurodiverse according to ADHDaware.org.uk.
More resources are needed, and a change in perspective on this Victorian education system.
More teachers must know how to spot and educate children who learn differently.Schools need more motivation to take in SEN children because it costs money to support them. Too many SEN children bring down overall school academic ratings. Some parents do not believe when they ask for support.
How relevant is our education system to our future generation?
The growth in technology in the next century will not be 100 years of growth but more exponentially—200,000 years of growth (at today's rate) with the emergence of AI and the changingjob market.
The school system s based on an adult agenda for the future workforce. This is based on the Victorian system. Do you think it's relevant for today and the future workforce?
Ever-changing or patching up old education ideology.
How much is applicable? The government wants every child to do maths until they are 18. Why? If you do a trade or apprenticeship, you learn the relevant maths for the role. What use is 'trigonometry' or 'quadratic equations' if you work in Medicine? Latin lessons at 11 years old to support learning foreign languages - £4 million. Just start learning the languages when children start school, along with our language, like other countries do. Bilingual parents have good results.
Beyond the education system
The more I read and learn about the innovators of our time, the more I realise that we need to play more. Childish experimentation allows our children to dream, create, invent, and believe in themselves as potential beings with aspirations. Experimentation allows our children to know themselves, their strengths, and their talents. Children come to school with a positive mindset and childish knowledge of what they want to be.
No one told them to get up and keep trying to learn to walk; they just got up and kept trying.
Why do some lose that determination to try? Why do they stop believing?
Watch a child absorbed in playing with their toys or organising the other children to make a den in the Reception class playground; at this time, they're being themselves, exploring the world, and not afraid to try. If they can not conform to the 'one-size fits all' system, they will struggle and most likely give up.
Increase in poor classroom behaviour
Why are teachers concerned about the rise in poor classroom behaviour?
Behaviour is a form of communication—what are the children trying to say? Are they bored, passive, or disruptive? Why? Talents could result in failure because they are not interested. Mental health issues in children can start as early as 6 years old for many reasons, but the sheer volume needs to be questioned.
