Heavy Work is like giving the nervous system a "reset" through purposeful muscle activity. In the context of dysregulation, heavy work for SEN children refers to activities that require the muscles to push, pull, lift, carry, climb, squeeze, or resist. These activities provide proprioceptive input—sensory information from the muscles, joints, and tendons that helps the brain understand where the body is in space.


Think of it this way:

It isn't about making a child tired or exhausting them. It's about giving the brain strong, organised sensory information that can help the child feel more aware of their body and, for many children, more regulated.

Why does Heavy Work help with dysregulated SEN children?

When a child is dysregulated, their nervous system may be:

  • Overwhelmed and overloaded.

  • Having difficulty transitioning or following instructions.

Heavy work provides consistent sensory input that can help the nervous system organise itself, making it easier for the child to access skills like:

Imagine your child's brain is like a snow globe that's been shaken. Heavy work for SEN children doesn't stop the snow from moving instantly, but it helps the flakes settle so the brain can think more clearly again.

This analogy captures why heavy work is often described as an organising sensory strategy rather than simply a calming one. It helps many children move closer to their "just right" level of alertness—ready to learn, connect, and cope with the demands of everyday life.


Examples of heavy work

Heavy work can easily be built into everyday life:

  • Carrying laundry baskets

  • Helping carry shopping bags

  • Vacuuming

  • Wiping tables

  • Pushing a full toy box

  • Gardening or digging

  • Kneading bread or playdough

🏫 At school

  • Carrying books

  • Stacking chairs

  • Moving classroom equipment

  • Cleaning the whiteboard

  • Helping set up PE equipment

  • Climbing

  • Animal walks (bear, crab or wheelbarrow walks)

Heavy work for SEN children isn't one-size-fits-all

Not every child responds in the same way.

For example:

  • An autistic child may use heavy work to reduce sensory overload and feel more grounded.

  • A child with ADHD may use heavy work to regulate their alertness and prepare their brain for focus.

  • Some children feel calmer afterwards.

  • Others feel more alert and ready to learn.

The goal isn't to make a child "quiet" or "still." The goal is to help them reach a state where they can think, communicate, play, and participate more successfully.


Heavy work (sometimes called proprioceptive input) can help some children with sensory dysregulation because it provides strong, predictable input to the muscles and joints. This activates the body's proprioceptive system, which helps the brain understand where the body is in space and can make sensory information feel more organised.


Here's why Heavy Work often helps for SEN children:


  • It gives the brain clear, reliable feedback. When a child pushes, pulls, carries, climbs, or squeezes something, receptors in their muscles, tendons, and joints send a steady stream of information to the brain. This input is generally easier for the nervous system to process than unpredictable sights, sounds, or light touch.

  • It can improve self-regulation. For some children, especially those with sensory processing differences or neurodevelopmental conditions, proprioceptive input may reduce feelings of being overwhelmed or under-responsive. They may appear calmer, more focused, or better able to transition between activities afterwards.

  • It may influence the autonomic nervous system. Deep pressure and heavy muscle work are thought to encourage a shift toward a more relaxed physiological state in some people, reducing the "fight-or-flight" response. Research suggests this effect varies between individuals, and the exact mechanisms are still being studied.

  • It provides a safe outlet for sensory seeking. Children who crave movement or pressure often instinctively seek activities like jumping, carrying heavy objects, or crashing into cushions. Purposeful "heavy work" can meet that need in a safer and more structured way.
